Rabbits (Oryctolagus Cuniculus)

  • Male – buck
  • Female – doe
  • Baby – kitten

Facts

  • The wild rabbit is a natural pest to farmers, as they eat crops and can damage fruit trees, but here at Farming World we have domesticated rabbits.
  • There are 40 breeds of domestic rabbit in this country, weighing between 1kg and 10kg.
  • Californian and New Zealand breeds are used for meat production, Rex for fur and Angora for wool.
  • The doe can produce 5-6 litters of 6-8 kittens per year.
  • It is estimated that a pair of rabbits and their offspring can produce three million rabbits in just three years!
  • Rabbit droppings act as a fertiliser, which is good for gardens, as it breaks down easily and does not damage crops.
  • Rabbits eat their own droppings, which is a perfectly normal process of gaining nutrients from parts of food that would be wasted by other animals.
